Distributions

There's a plethora of distros, and derivitives from those, but these are/were some of the more well known ones.

BSD Berkeley Software Distribution. A Unix from Berkeley University, it also has various derivitives·
- FreeBSD
- OpenBSD
- NetBSD
Debian (a Linux)
- Ubuntu (a Debian-based Linux distribution). Popular and quite good for Linux newcomers, it's the usual Linux people choose as an escape from Windows.
Mandrake (a Linux). Now defunct, but projects were forked off it:
- Mandriva Linux. Previously known as Mandrake (renamed because of rights issues with the Mandrake comic strip), but no-longer exists.
  - Mageia a fork off the (now defunct) Mandriva Linux project
  - OpenMandriva a fork off the (now defunct) Mandriva Linux project)
QNX (a Unix-like OS). Aimed at embedded systems—small custom devices, rather than general purpose computers.
Red Hat Linux. Originally commercial, then free, now a commercial Linux, currently named Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
- CentOS. A third-party, free, version derived from the source-code of the commercial Red Hat Linuxes.
- Fedora project. Red Hat's replacement for their previously-free Red Hat Linuxes. In essence, it's the test bed for what may go into the future versions of Red Hat Linux.
- Scientific Linux. A third-party, free, version derived from the source-code of the commercial Red Hat Linuxes, aimed at use in science labs.
Slackware (a Unix-like Linux).
SUSE Linux (relocating to Novell)
