A sequel to 2001 (there's two further books, that haven't been made into films), this one takes off to discover what happened to the “Discovery” mission. Along the way, alien life is discovered, and something interesting happens in our solar system (to say what, really would spoil the film).
Unfortunately, this film doesn't have the look, nor feel, of 2001. It's not a Stanley Kubrick film (this one's by Peter Hyams), it's pretty much the same as any other space film.
