Did something go wrong with the website?

From time to time something does go haywire, and it take some time before it gets noticed (especially if it's not the entire site).  Several times I've had the hosting service provide completely stuff up the site by doing stupid things.

30 Aug 2015

The hosting service that used to run my website was bought out, and the new one broke the entire website because they use a different webserver that doesn't provide the same features as the old one (despite it claiming to be a drop-in replacement).  It took quite some time to sort out.

Also, around the same time, my phone and internet service provider, Telstra, completely stuffed up my service, with the changeover to NBN, so the only way to get in touch with me may be through my mobile phone (on another network).

April 2025

Around the beginning of April 2025 the hosting service provider (VentraIP) dumbly reset the file permissions of every file on the site, again, wiping out all the navigational links between pages.  Recovering from that took quite some time, there's thousands of files to check.  And then I went through the whole site looking for ways to future proof things against repeats of that incompetent action, which meant adjusting several hundred pages.

The hosting service provider (VentraIP) stuffed up the webserver doing OR comparisons in server-side-includes (something that had worked fine for very many years), messing up date-dependent page content insertions.  And it no-longer handles a blank space between numerical day of month and its name, in those tests, so dates needed reformatting.
