Why's it called a “soapbox”? Well a soap box (from when soap used to be freighted in wooden packing boxes) is a traditional platform to stand on top of when you want to air your views to a crowd. There used to be a location in Adelaide (a very long time ago) called “Soapbox Corner,” where the general public could do just that.
