404 error (the requested object was not found)

Sorry, we couldn't find what you asked for.  We've checked down the back of the couch, behind the fridge, and asked the cat, but we didn't have any luck.  It might be gone, it might have moved, you might have asked for something that was never here…  You can try looking on the homepage, table of contents, or index pages to see if you can find it somewhere else.

404: Not found

If you've typed the address yourself, check that you've typed it exactly the same as you're supposed to.  Use upper- or lower-case letters as it was written, don't change anything, and don't add anything extra.  The webserver doesn't play guessing-games for you.  But all my pages/links have been formed so you shouldn't need to use the shift key, at all (all lower case letter, with slashes, hyphens, and hashes being the only punctuation used between words).

e.g. http://www.example.com/sub-section/page#heading

If you've found a link from some plain text source (such as in an e-mail or typed on paper), you may find it typed with < and > pointy brackets around it.  They're not part of the address, they mark off the beginning and end of the address, so you can tell which characters are actually part of the address, and which characters are just some other writing around them.  You only use what's inside them.

e.g. When you see a link written like <http://www.example.com/>, you browse to it by just typing:  http://www.example.com/

If you've followed a link from some external site, you might want to contact them about fixing that up.  Faults, like that, are beyond our control, and often go unnoticed by those external sites.  You can usually contact their editor by e-mailing the webmaster at their domain name.

e.g. If you came from a broken link at http://www.example.com/something/like/this.html you'd try e-mailing webmaster@example.com

Search engines usually sort themselves out, after a while; though some search engines are just plain broken.  I wouldn't bother doing anything about broken references from search engines, that's their problem.

If you've followed a link from within this site, we'll probably get around to fixing it by the end of the month, at least, since we periodically check the logs for error messages.  If you think it needs more urgent attention, have a look at our contact details page for how to get in touch.

NB:  The site was put together at the start of December, 2006.  I know I've not completely finished the job.  You've probably found one of the parts I'm still working on.  Redirects have been set up from the old site to the new site, but only for the pages, I will not be doing so for the images.  People are warned not to link directly to images, and it's bad netiquette to do so, but they still do it.  I will not support it.
